Lesley Dow

I was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland. I graduated in theatre arts and went on to work as an actor and street performer with the renowned Mischief La-Bas company. I have also worked as a drama therapist, drama lecturer at Langside College, drama teacher for people with learning challenges at Anniesland College and an Ashtanga yoga instructor.

As well as the formal education stuff, I have travelled extensively across the globe, living in France, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, India, San Francisco, Thailand and the tropical hinterland of northern Australia where I currently reside in a little place called Mullumbimby with my partner Marc and two beautiful rescue dogs: Chimp and Bobby. My creative energy and attention are now focused on exploring the abiding spiritual connect between humans and animals, through the medium of children’s writing.

Lesley Dow - One heartbeat

Imagine a World

Imagine a world, beautifully illustrated by Krzysztof Barnas, centres around young Lou, who loves animals of every kind. Furry or feathered, they are all her friends. When Lou’s Mum serves up the regular evening meal that includes meat, Lou can no longer bring herself to eat her friends and goes to bed with her tummy rumbling from hunger. Luckily Lou has someone watching out for her. Each night after refusing to eat her dinner, a mysterious visitor leaves a delicious meal of fruit and veggies at her door. So, what happens when Lou’s Mum insists Lou eat meat for dinner? Can Lou make her family understand that she wants to help animals by not eating them? Imagine a World gives readers a peek inside a little girl’s imagination and dreams. The book shows that children can make their own choices about things that matter to them. We just have to listen.

One heartbeat

One Heartbeat explores and answers the question arising from wee Harry’s curiosity about animals and whether they have a heart like humans. The story takes the reader and listener on an adventure to meet a variety of animals, to touch their hearts and realize they too feel pain and pleasure, sadness and joy. Harry discovers that all living beings deserve kindness and love, ‘just like you and me’. One heartbeat gently guides child and parent alike through the critical moral imperative of acknowledging personhood in all animals. By using the vibration of the heart as a signifier of our commonality, Harry embraces the simplicity of a deep morality binding all creatures in a covenant of mutual respect and compassion.
